Snowman

Supplies

· Felting Needle
· Felting Foam Block
· Wool roving-White or Cream, Black, Orange
· Wool Yarn for Scarf
· Size 7 double pointed needles
· Scissors
· Yarn Needle
· Hot Glue Gun
· Branches for Arms (willow)

Directions

1. For the bottom snowball of the snowman, wind a tuft of white or cream roving into a tight ball about the size of a softball. Place the felting block on a work surface and place the roving ball on the foam.
2. To shrink and felt the roving ball, use the felting needle by poking it into the ball repeatedly while turning it. Continue needle-felting until it is firmly felted.
3. For the head of the snowman wind a tuft of white or cream roving into a tight ball about the size of the firmly felted bottom snowball. Repeat step #2 and needle-felt until firmly felted.
4. Place the small snowball on top of the large snowball and needle-felt the two balls together with the felting needle.
5. Pull off nine small pieces of black roving and roll between your thumb and fingers to make a small ball. Place three of these pieces down the front of the large snowball for buttons. Needle-felt them into the snowball until you get the right size and shape. Needle-felt two pieces for the eyes on the small snowball along with four for the mouth.
6. Pull off a piece of orange roving to use for the carrot nose. Roll a three inch strip between your hands. Needle-felt the piece to make the roving stiff. Cut the roving to make the shape of a carrot. Needle-felt the carrot onto the snowman.
7. Knit an I-Cord out of the wool yarn for the scarf using size 7 double pointed needles. Cast on 4 sts. Knit, don’t turn. Slip the sts back to the beginning of the needle and knit the row again. Continue this manner until you have a short length of knitting, pull down on the cord and the gap at the back will close. Continue until the cord is 15” long. Thread the yarn through the sts and pull firmly. Use your yarn needle to finish off the scarf. Tie around the snowman’s neck. (If you don’t know how to knit, you can also needle felt a scarf).
8. Needle felt a 4” flat circle of black for the bottom of the hat. It will not become as firm as the balls.
9. Using black roving wrap the roving to a 3” x2” piece for the top of the hat. Needle-felt until stiff, on the sides top and bottom. Finished size is 1 ¾” x2”.
10. Needle-felt the bottom and top part of the hat together.
11. Needle-felt the hat onto the snowman.
12. Pull pieces of black roving to make a 3” flat heart shape, this will be the snowman’s shoes. Needle-felt the heart shape.
13. Needle-felt the heart shape onto the bottom of the snowman for shoes. Add more if you need to, in order for the snowman to balance standing up.
14. Cut two small pieces of willow or other branch for the arms. Use the hot glue gun to glue the arms to the snowman’s body.
15. You are finished! Excellent job!! Every snowman will look different. Add different accessories: birds, scarves, hats, snowballs. Have fun!
